Wish I Wrote It

My current work in progress takes place (at least partially) in a bookstore. So when I came to this passage in Maggie Stiefvater’s Shiver I was, naturally, overcome with writer envy:
As the hours crept by, the afternoon sunlight bleached all the books on the shelves to pale, gilded versions of themselves and warmed the paper and ink inside the covers so that the smell of unread words hung in the air.
_ Maggie Steifvater, Shiver, p.8 (paperback version)
That, my fine friends, is perfection.

This is one beautiful use of words with heat and color. I can picture that sunlight bleaching, gilding, but, then–finally!–warming the words.

Patty,
I agree! I loved this because I could actually smell the way books warmed by the sun smell. I love it when writing touches your senses like that.
